Chiang Mai, nestled in the mountainous region of northern Thailand, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure. Here’s a list of the top 10 things to do in this vibrant city, with indulging in a traditional bamboo tattoo experience at The Bamboo Rooms topping the list!
1. Get a Traditional Bamboo Tattoo at The Bamboo Rooms
At the top of our list is the unique experience of getting a traditional bamboo tattoo. (We admit we are biased!) However, we are renowned for our skilled artists who are the best bamboo tattoo artists in the world. Having a bamboo tattoo may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get inked in the centuries old traditional Thai way. The bamboo method is less painful than machine tattoos and they heal almost instantly making them ideal for the hot, tropical climate of Chiang Mai. It is not just about getting a tattoo; it’s about embracing an ancient art form that is unique and rare.
2. Visit the Elephant Pride Sanctuary
This ethical sanctuary for elephants is a must-visit. Here, you can interact with these magnificent creatures in a responsible way, learning about their rescue and rehabilitation. It’s an eye-opening experience that highlights the importance of wildlife conservation.
3. Explore the Old City Temples
Chiang Mai’s historical center is dotted with stunning temples, each telling its own story. Must-visits include Wat Phra Singh, known for its impressive Lanna art, and Wat Chedi Luang, where a massive chedi (pagoda) stands majestically. We recommend booking a walking tour to get the most out of this experience and to learn this history as you walk. These can be purchased through travel websites such as Tripadvisor.
4. Take a Thai Cooking Class
Thai cuisine is loved worldwide, and Chiang Mai is the perfect place to learn how to cook authentic Thai dishes. Many local cooking schools offer classes where you can learn to make classics like Pad Thai, Green Curry, Mango Sticky Rice and northern local dishes such as Chiang Mai’s famous dish, the delectable Khao Soi.
Also, we can’t mention Khao Soi without letting you know about Khaosoi Maesai, a Michelin guide recommended restaurant that specializes in Khao Soi. We highly recommend the beef. The restaurant is just behind The Bamboo Rooms and you can find their details here.
5. Shop at the Night Bazaar
As the sun sets, the famous Night Bazaar comes to life. This vibrant market is a great place to shop for locally produced handicrafts, clothing, souvenirs and beautiful gifts for friends and family. Don’t forget to haggle to get the best deals!
6. Hike to Doi Suthep
Overlooking Chiang Mai is the mountain of Doi Suthep, a must-visit for nature lovers. The hike up is invigorating, and you’re rewarded with breathtaking views and the beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple at the top. We recommend leaving early to avoid the midday heat and make sure you have a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. The red songtail taxies go up the mountain every half an hour or so for those who would like a more relaxed journey up the mountains.
7. Relax at a Local Spa
Thai massages are famous for their rejuvenating qualities. Chiang Mai, with its array of spas, offers the perfect setting to experience this. From traditional Thai massages to luxurious spa treatments, there’s something for everyone. However, be warned, the Thai massage can feel brutal and you will be stretched and kneaded to your limits. Also, full body does mean full body (except for the genitalia) so ladies, don’t be surprised if you get a boob and butt massage! The higher end treatment rooms linked to the hotels are generally more reserved and respect that westerners are not used to such a ‘full’ body massage!
8. Visit the Art in Paradise Museum
This interactive 3D art museum is a fun experience for all ages. The museum features a range of optical illusion artworks that make for great photos and an unforgettable visit. This is an absolute must on a rainy day.
9. Enjoy a Khantoke Dinner and Cultural Show
Experience Northern Thai culture with a Khantoke dinner. This traditional dining experience, where guests are served local dishes while sitting on the floor, is often accompanied by a cultural show featuring Lanna dances and music. Please look at TripAdvisor or Viator for the latest deals and offers.
10. Cycle Around the City
Renting a bike and cycling around Chiang Mai is a fantastic way to explore the city at your own pace. You can visit local markets, parks, and hidden corners of the city that you might miss otherwise. We really recommend you get lost in the city and enjoy the local coffee shops and food stalls whilst taking your time to enjoy the city.
Chiang Mai is a city that blends the charm of the old with the convenience of the modern, offering experiences that cater to every kind of traveler. Whether it’s getting a traditional bamboo tattoo or exploring ancient temples, this city promises an unforgettable journey.
